March 13th, 2008

LINC Lifestyle Phone
In 2002 Americans throw away over 130 millions cell phones. That number has probably ballooned to over 150 million by now, if not more. The reason: obsolescence. Most cell phones are outdated in a few years and consumers are a fickle bunch. One company, The Greener Grass hopes to change that with the introduction of the LINC Lifestyle Concept Phone. Not only is the phone packed with features (Bluetooth, GPS, touch screen, etc) it is almost completely recyclable. Better yet, the company plans to institute a recycling program such that the consumer can send their current device back in exchange for a new one and they'll handle the recycling process. The phone itself will contain no paints or adhesives, and the glass and aluminum parts can be recycled or reused in their raw form.

LG Voyager Review (Verizon Wireless)

LG VOYAGER REVIEW (VERIZON WIRELESS)

March 3rd, 2008

LG Voyager 2By Ian S. Gertler

Does the LG Voyager (from Verizon Wireless) Offer A Worthwhile Mobile Journey?

What's your mobile destination? If it's a smart phone that delivers functionality, service and great applications, get ready -- LG and Verizon Wireless are ready to take you on a wireless voyage!

Initially created for the enterprise business executive, smart phone growth has been tremendous and now attracts all market demographics -- corporate professionals, small business users and the everyday gadget-loving consumer like me. In fact, the latest research from analyst firm Canalys shows how much the converged device market has grown over the past year. These devices represented around 10% of the global mobile phone market in 2007, with annual growth of 60% making them one of the fastest growing segments of the technology industry.

Welcome to the world of mobile convergence for everyone with smart phones.

From sharing photos on-the-go to text-messaging and searching the Internet, today's smart phones -- like the LG Voyager from Verizon Wireless -- let users connect to others and find things easier and quicker than before -- and even has the ability to make voice calls! Want to learn more? Keep reading.

Appearance and Design
The Voyager is an intriguing device -- especially in appearance. With sharp yet subtle colors (black and metallic silver) and a large 'interactive touch screen' filled with bright icons for the various functions -- and often compared to Apple's iPhone, LG has created a smart phone design that will make others take notice. When you flip it open, you're presented with a compelling experience as well -- a full-size QWERTY keyboard and an internal display that works with the outside touch screen (at times) -- essentially two color screens for the price of one. This innovative design offers a much easier way to handle text messaging and email with a familiar keyboard rather than the typical challenges associated with "phone typing," one of the Voyager's strongest benefits and differentiators.

For those concerned about how the Voyager will sit in your hands, the physical attributes make it a substantial yet comfortable fit. The dimensions are 4.64 inches long, 2.12 inches wide and .71 inches thick, while it weighs in at 4.69 ounces. It even has a pull-out antenna, but more about that shortly.

Functionality and Performance
While design is an important component for most products, the mobile experience is driven by performance and functionality in both the device itself and carrier service offerings. The LG Voyager is packed with both the necessary functionalities and the bells-and-whistles. The outer LCD touch screen provides an essential control center for all of the phone's primary capabilities with the phone, Internet, gaming, application and messaging functions. One of the default settings with the touch screen is a constant vibration when you tap the screen -- some may like this, but I found it slightly annoying. For me, the vibration setting is best for silent mode when you don't want to hear the ringing. The user interface is decent, but isn't seamless between the outer and inner screens. Multiple interfaces seems confusing at times, but I suspect it just takes some getting used to with time.

Regarding the carrier offerings, I think Verizon Wireless offers one of the most comprehensive and robust libraries of applications, games, media and other services available in the cell phone market today. Among the various services and as previously mentioned, the Voyager includes a pull-out antenna that transforms the device into a real-time television through Verizon's Vcast mobile TV network (for an additional $15 a month). Unfortunately, this service was unavailable in the Raleigh, North Carolina market. Another interesting application was Verizon's VZ Navigator GPS mapping and direction service, which essentially offers users a mobile GPS opportunity whether driving down the road or walking down the street of your local town or city (monthly or daily usage fees apply). Like most GPS and mapping services, VZ Navigator was fairly accurate -- with a few "misguided routes" along the way.

Aside from actual voice-based calls-which included great coverage, the phone is fairly disappointing at addressing two main features -- email and Internet browsing. It takes a few clicks to get into the email application, but it's relatively simple to use with web mail accounts or other IMAP/POP3 based providers. If you synchronize your mobile device with your personal computer, Voyager misses the boat on that-which is surprising, since contact lists and calendars seem to be increasingly important for smart phone users. The Voyager's full HTML Internet browser was adequate, but appeared relatively slow since it runs on a third-generation data network. The Voyager displayed pages accurately, but slower than expected. The problem may be more with the overall mobile browsing and Internet experience than the Voyager web capabilities, but I found it to be slightly disappointing. It also lacks a Wi-Fi connection capability to hop on home networks and/or local wireless hotspots when available -- a big thing for me these days, unless you choose to get an unlimited data plan. Overall, the entire user interface for the various software features could be improved.

A Few Other Capabilities and/or Shortcomings
Some other notable features and misses:
Bluetooth-enabled: you can use a wireless headset to make and receive calls and listen to the music player.
Speaking of music, Voyager's built-in digital music player was okay but far from the iPod experience. Luckily, Verizon makes it simple to buy music online ($1.99 per song).
The 2-megapixel camera was better than expected, both for images and video. The files were easy to locate and send to others.
Battery life was also less than expected, with the phone needing to be charged more often from using the various functions. I'd explore premium battery replacements.
Internal memory was adequate for basic functions, but another great benefit is the possibility to add memory cards up to 8GB which should provide more than enough space for song lists, photos, email messages and more. However, you'll need to purchase your own microSD card -- it's not part of the package, so the cost is rising!
Laptop users and business professionals that travel a bit will value Voyager's capability to link to a PC as a modem through the Verizon Wireless broadband wireless data network -- probably the best one available today.

Pricing, Availability and Conclusion
The LG Voyager is available directly from a variety of Verizon Wireless channels, including stores and the website. It's base price is $349.99, but Verizon Wireless has offered a $50 mail-in rebate with new 2-year agreements. As a result, $299.99 sale price is extremely competitive to other mobile devices in this category -- with a variety of service plan options and add-ons (like Verizon's Vcast mobile TV network for an additional $15 monthly charge).

While the LG Voyager from Verizon Wireless has many impressive qualities and was worthwhile to test, the interface and applications aren't as robust and seamless as some other options on the market. For the average consumer looking for a good and fairly affordable smart phone, it's worth considering and testing out with something like the iPhone. The business professional will most likely find the BlackBerry to be the best choice for now. It will be interesting to see the next version of the Voyager and how they address the shortcomings that exist today. Overall, it's a good device -- but not the best on the market, although Verizon Wireless provides the best carrier services available.

The Holux M-241 Helps You Tag Your Digital Photos

THE HOLUX M-241 HELPS YOU TAG YOUR DIGITAL PHOTOS

March 11th, 2008

Holux M-241 GPS Logger and Bluetooth Dongle
One of the inherent problems with digital photos is keeping tracking of them. Ideally the camera would figure out whose in the scene and tag accordingly. For now, our best bet is a GPS logger, such as the Holux M-241 (resembles a Kodak analog film roll). Just slip the device in your pocket and turn it to on. Once it acquires coordinates it will capture its location (up to 130,000 way points) in preset intervals with time stamp. Once the photos are uploaded you simply need to match the time stamps and bingo, you've got tagged pictures. Sure it still doesn't tell you who (wink) or what you were doing, but at least they'll be more manageable then 'pic-10102. The M-241 also works as a Bluetooth GPS dongle enabling compatible devices to become full blown GPS units.

Available here for $69 (on sale).

Currently their site doesn't detail cost and expiration time of the rentals. They company is based out of Ireland, so don't expect it state side any time soon.

Phone Shield
Although I am pretty sure the Quartz Phoneshield doesn't work, the manufactures claim it'll reduce the harmful side effects of radiation, which are fatigue, tiredness, reduced concentration, disturbed vision, etc, from cell phones - it's scientifically proven according to the copy on the site.  I can't find any close up pics of the device, but it looks to be a quarter sized and shaped device that you stick on the face of your cell phone.  Oh ya, they've got the good old scare tactic of 'protect your family' and they've included pics of children using cell phones.

Available here for about $20.

Real World Ray Gun (video)

REAL WORLD RAY GUN (VIDEO)

March 4th, 2008

I caught this on 60 Minutes Sunday night. The Ray Gun is the real deal as you'll see depicted in this 60 minutes piece (this version has been edited for online). The ray gun penetrates 1/64 of an inch of your body - just below your skin and leaves no permanent damage if used properly. It can be used from a distance that far exceeds today's nonlethal, crowd controlling weapons making it ideal for use during riots and crowd control. Technically known as the Active Denial System, it has yet to see true field testing due to beauracratic BS, which believe it or not, is partially due to its non-lethal qualities. In the last 10 years it's been tested 11,000 times with the worst side effects ranging from rashes to small blisters.

Jet Powered Minivan (videos)

JET POWERED MINIVAN (VIDEOS)

March 3rd, 2008

Jet Van
"Are we there yet?" will soon be a forgotten kid nagging phrase thanks to the Jet Turbine Powered van. It's a turbine which should mean the jet's power is converted to the tires unlike a normal jet engine, which is thrust driven. There's a multitude of videos, but be sure to check out the motorized rear glass window that lifts up to expose the protruding exhaust ports. It looks like the development has gone through multiple iterations as the engine port style has changed, and the soccer ball sticker moved from the left to the right side of the back door. According to Hackedgadgets it can do 1/8th of mile in 7.65 seconds at 96mph.

Ripserver: Super Powered Consumer Level Music Ripping Server

RIPSERVER: SUPER POWERED CONSUMER LEVEL MUSIC RIPPING SERVER

March 5th, 2008

Rip Server Black
Ripserver has long been in the prosumer game providing the necessary technology for companies to 'rip' massive amounts of music. Today they've announced the availability of their consumer level rip station called the 'Ripserver'. Setup and operation sound super simple. Just toss in a CD and within minutes the Ripserver will copy the music (MP3 or Flac encoding), download artwork, and add the necessary tags. A monitor isn't mandatory for use - although there is a VGA out - as the Ripserver is intended for shared network use (it's an NAS or Network Attached Storage) via its Gigabit Ethernet connection, and you'll need to access its configuration via a web browser for initial up and running. Runs on Linxus so expect a very stable environment and it's compatible with most popular music networking devices (e.g. Sonos, Slim Devices, Roku, PS3, etc). Available now in black or white, and comes in two sizes: 500GB ($1190) and 1TB ($1390). If that isn't enough space for you, then add on an external drive via USB.

Optimus Tactus: Touchscreen Keyboard

OPTIMUS TACTUS: TOUCHSCREEN KEYBOARD

March 5th, 2008

Optimus Cactus Keyboard
As you know, Art Lebedev finally started shipping the first Optimus keyboards a few weeks ago, but only to customers that ordered over a year ago. The original Optimus is in fact a bunch of mini OLED screens jammed into key sized boxes. Well, their newest concept, the Optimus Tactus, simply removes the keys and just goes all screen. In fact, one could argue that it's a touch screen in a keyboard shape, right? Tactical feedback will be lost, but manufacturing should be more straight forward - not necessarily cheaper - than the original Optimus keyboard.

On a side note, I love the shoutout they give Engadget by placing their logo on the keyboard.

Toilet Seat Pedal 2
Hard to believe, but women hate to fall into the toilet. No really, they can't stand it, especially when their husband or loved one leaves the seat up after a 6 pack of Silver Bullets. Well, fear not guys, because the Flipper Toilet Seat Raising Pedal has you covered. Just install, step on while draining the lizard to raise, step off and the seat lowers to its original position. No need to touch the seat and it might as well be automatic. Just don't step off 'a shake' too early otherwise it might cause more problems than it solves.

Transformer Like Car

TRANSFORMER LIKE CAR

March 10th, 2008

Skoda Twindoor
So it's not like the whole car transforms, but at least it's more than meets the eye, right?  As you can see, the Skoda Twindoor, based on the VW Passat incorporates two different trunk styles into one car: hatchback and the good old regular trunk style found in sedans.  The multi-hinged trunk won't increase cubic space, but should make it easier to shove thing in and out.

Sprint Intros Realtime Captioning Of Telephone Calls

SPRINT INTROS REALTIME CAPTIONING OF TELEPHONE CALLS

March 5th, 2008

Sprint Relay
SprintNextel intro'd a new service today for the hard-of-hearing. Sound's counter intuitive given hard-of-hearing and phone calls hardly go hand-in-hand, right? Wrong. Called CapTel, the new service dictates word-for-word what is said between callers and displays it on screen. Available to all Sprint customer (includes landline and cell phones) in the continental US free of charge, the service is aimed at folks who can hear, but sometimes struggle to capture the complete conversation. To access the captions, one must login into the Sprint Webcaptel website where the caption are displayed in realtime. Yes, the service is useless if you're not in front of a computer.
